07 NIGHTS & 08 DAYS | BHUTAN

8 Days
Day 01: Gateway to the Kingdom – Arrival at Phuentsholing (190 Km / 5 Hrs approx.)

As you step off the train or flight, the warm, humid air of the Indian plains greets you. But your eyes are set ahead — towards Bhutan, the Last Shangri-La. The roads wind gently, hugging the foothills, as the landscape transforms from bustling Indian towns to the peaceful, mist-draped hills of Bhutan.

Arriving in Phuentsholing, the gateway to Bhutan, you immediately sense the calm energy of this small border town. A blend of cultures, languages, and smiles greet you. Check in to your hotel and rest — for tomorrow, the real magic begins.

Day 02: A Mystic Ascent – Phuentsholing to Thimphu (150 Km / 5 Hrs approx.)

Wake to a fresh Himalayan breeze. After a hearty breakfast, your permits are arranged and you officially enter the Kingdom of Bhutan. The drive to Thimphu is nothing short of cinematic — misty roads weave through lush hills and sleepy hamlets. You pause at Gedu, perched 9,000 feet above sea level, breathing in crisp mountain air.

Stops include the serene Crocodile Breeding Centre, the tranquil Kharbandi Gompa, and a picturesque halt at Wankha Waterfalls. At Chojum, you witness a stunning confluence of Bhutan’s two sacred rivers — a moment of quiet reflection as water and spirit merge.

By evening, you arrive in Thimphu, the heart of Bhutan. A city that blends tradition and modernity effortlessly.

Day 3: A Day in the Dragon King’s Capital

Wake up in the capital city nestled in the lap of emerald mountains. After breakfast, you begin your exploration:

  • Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Dordenma): The massive golden Buddha watches silently over the valley – peaceful and protective.
  • National Memorial Chorten: Spin the prayer wheels with locals, their murmured chants weaving into the breeze.
  • Folk Heritage Museum: A heartwarming peek into Bhutanese rural life.

Post-lunch, drive up to Sangaygang Viewpoint, followed by a visit to the Changangkha Monastery — one of the oldest temples in the region. Then meet Bhutan’s elusive national animal, the Takin, at the preserve center. As the sun begins to set, your final visit is to the majestic Tashichho Dzong — its golden roof shimmering, standing tall as the seat of Bhutanese governance and faith.

Day 4: Through the Mountain Pass – Into the Realm of Happiness (75 Km | ~3 Hours)
Your journey today takes you over the legendary Dochu La Pass (3,150 m). Stop here to admire 108 chortens and, if the skies are kind, the snow-clad peaks of the Eastern Himalayas.

Descending into the warmer Punakha Valley, you check into your hotel before heading to the magnificent Punakha Dzong, flanked by the Mo and Pho Chhu rivers. This is the Palace of Great Happiness, and you’ll feel it — the gentle hum of monks chanting, the lilting prayer flags dancing in the wind.

Later, take a peaceful walk through mustard fields to the Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility. It’s a place of legend, laughter, and blessings, built in honor of the Divine Madman, Lama Drukpa Kunley. End the day with a walk across the Punakha Suspension Bridge, swaying lightly above gushing turquoise waters.

Day 5: Valleys of Dreams – The Path to Paro (120 Km | ~4 Hours)

Drive back via Dochu La Pass as the mountains bid you a gentle farewell. En route, explore Simtokha Dzong, Bhutan’s oldest fortress, now a school that echoes with laughter and chants.

Arriving in Paro, nestled in a lush green valley surrounded by peaks, you feel immediately enchanted. After settling in, begin your local sightseeing:

  • Stroll across the Nya-mey Zam (Bridge).
  • Visit Dungtse Lhakhang, a rare chorten-style temple.
  • Experience quiet contemplation at Druk Choeding and Tamchog Lhakhang.
  • Stand before the mighty Ringpung Dzong and admire its historic murals.
  • Marvel at the distant view of the mystical Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest).
  • End your tour at the watchful Ta Dzong, now a museum.

Day 6: The Sacred Trek – A Pilgrimage of the Soul

Option 1: Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang)
Today is a day of soul-stirring adventure. The trek to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, perched precariously on a cliff 3,000 feet above the Paro valley, is both physically and spiritually rewarding. As you hike through pine forests and pass fluttering prayer flags, the air is heavy with incense and legends. Reaching the monastery is triumphant — you are where Padmasambhava meditated in the 8th century.

Option 2: Chelela Pass Excursion
If you prefer a scenic drive, head to Chelela Pass, the highest motorable point in Bhutan. Surrounded by a riot of wildflowers, with dramatic views of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, it’s a photographer’s dream. Let the wind carry your prayers across the mountains.

Return to Paro for a warm meal and quiet reflection.

Day 7: The Journey Back – One Last Look (150 Km | ~5 Hours)
After breakfast, begin your journey back towards the Indian border. Pause at the Paro Airport Viewpoint, one of the most beautiful airports in the world, nestled between mountains. You can’t help but look back — this valley has given you so much.

En route, visit a local market, take a few last photos, and hold onto the gentle rhythm of Bhutan — it stays with you long after you leave.

Overnight stay in Phuentsholing

Day 8: Departure – A Goodbye with Gratitude(190 Km | ~5 Hours)
As the car rolls back towards Bagdogra or NJP, there’s a quietness in the air. Not of sadness, but of peace. You came seeking adventure and found something more — humility, joy, stillness.

Bhutan doesn’t just welcome you; it transforms you. And though this is the end of the itinerary, it’s just the beginning of your lifelong bond with the Kingdom of Happiness.
Emotion: Gratitude – you leave lighter, freer, more whole.
